Mr & Mrs Valentine

IMG_11518 teams took part in the Valentine Day’s massacre and only one team managed to win all their 3 games. Wellhouse Wanderers  were cruising to a win with a 13-2 and a 13-0 in their first 2 games and only needed any sort of win in the final game but failed to do so. Smith & Jones came through on the rails with a win in the last game of the day and so Malcolm and Sandra are our Valentine competition winners. Fred and Sue were runners up. Chocolates and helium balloons all round.

Next events are Monthly Melee on March 1st with a St Patrick’s day event on 17th March.

Monthly member melee tomorrow!

If you only turn up now and again then tomorrow is a good day to try. 1pm start and 3 rounds where we keep scores. Happy Valentines Day Quotes 2015 For Husband & WifeThe other event in February will be 2 Sundays away on the 15th and that will be a Valentine’s Day pairs event. Anyone can be your Valentine partner even your wife or husband. 3 rounds with your Valentine. Don’t worry about any dress code if it’s cold. Put your thermals on and keep warm. No need to pre-register but turn up before 1pm.

You might have played against an International.

Angie Gaughan from York played in a regional event on Sunday 18th in Greenhead Park Petanque terrain. It was meant to be a warm up for a big match later in the month but on the day the temperature never rose above zero and the whole event was played on a covering of snow. After 5 rounds and over 5 hours play Angie and her partner Alan Swift were the only team to win all their 5 matches and walked off with the first prize. Huddersfield Petanque club members Jane & Roger Farrar won 4 out of their 5 games and ended up 7th out of 22 teams.

A week later and 30 degrees warmer Angie was in the south of France playing in the World Championships. Some of you may have played against her in the cold and the snow on the 18th January. The hard work you put in then may have helped her but in any case you can now say you played against an international level player.

January 18th dawned clear and very very cold. Club members were at the terrain early getting it ready for visitors from around the region for another heat (if that’s the right word) in the Northern Winter Pairs. And they turned up.

44 players plus another few supporters and during the day we saw a few club members dropping in for a look but having enough sense not to play. It was bitterly cold and the terrain was covered in a severe frost. We were advised not to rake it so we began with an all white surface. By the end of the day it was all grey. In between it froze solid, melted, broke up and made accurate pointing difficult. However over 5 rounds the better players came through and Northern President Alan Swift and his partner England international Angie Gaughan won the substantial first prize of £50. On the way we saw sunshine, rain, sleet and snow showers and by 3pm most folk are happy to be getting back into nice warm cars and going home.

Update – the full results can be seen on Northern Petanque website. Highlights are clearly Hope & Dope team made up of club members Roger & Jane Farrar who won 4 of their 5 matches. The lower end of the results sheet was filled with plenty of HPC members but after exposure to severe weather and some of the best players in the northern region several still said they enjoyed it. We’ll do the same in the summer when it will be hopefully much warmer.

Committee news

The committee has grown. We now have Julie looking after club kit, julielawford@hotmail.com), Brendan and Martin looking at developing the terrain and its facilities as well as the original 3 committee members.

committee-meeting

The committee also had a very positive meeting with Robert Whitaker, KMC Park Manager, who
listened to our plans to improve the terrain and agreed with most of them such as benches, a club shed, a club noticeboard and an extension to the terrain to cater for bigger events. This will have to be self funded as KMC have no money for this work. However we are looking at funding and sponsorship and will report to members as and when we make progress. If anyone has a spare garden shed about 3m by 3m or a few unwanted park benches please let us know.
