Membership explosion!

bangNot expecting much apart from getting our new club polo shirts for the first time it turned out to be a fantastic day of petanque with at one stage 25 people playing and many newcomers promising to join.

Christine, Alan, Dick, Martin, Julie, Denise plus two whose names we missed but are promising to join Tuesday. If it all goes well we’ll jump to 49 members .

And Roy’s melee is on Tuesday

roy_orbison_by_jb_online-d2zohay.png

As Paul is on holiday for most of September Roy and Sue will be running the show and Roy’s first event is the melee on Tuesday 26th August at 1pm.

Members only; No entry fee; no prizes just the satisfaction that only winning can give. Three rounds where we keep scores. One individual will win the whole thing…

And Thursdays will continue for a while.

ThursdayWe were planning to stop Thursdays at the end of August but they’re proving popular with members who are still working (hard luck!) so they’ll continue as long as the light holds out.

If you can arrive earlier than 6pm it would help.

A wet thursday evening

Umbrella-Clip-art-21The rain was spitting and off and on and the waterproofs were everywhere until about 8pm when it threw it down and we all went home to watch Hollyoaks on catch up TV. In the meantime we played 3 rounds with 12 players including a junior member Jasmine. Going into the last round only 2 players and won every game and in the end Sandra triumphed mostly due to a 13-1 win and a 13-2 win. Thank you for turning up and well played everyone.

The club singles champion is…

Emily 13 & HPC Midsummer Do 074Sue Crofts.

Pictured here with Ted Beetham who won our Open Midsummer Melee This Sunday Sue did it all on her own. Following a 3 round snake where she won all her games with the best points difference of the three players who did the same she played a very good final against Robin and won 13-10. Sue Horner from Honley was 3rd.The standard of the final was remarkable and the handicapping system worked well as most matches were very close throughout the event.

It was a windy and wet weekend  but 10 players turned up and had great time dodging rain showers. After the event which only lasted 90 minutes we played a few social games. 4  more interested players arrived and promised to join so overall a good weekend.

Friendly Result

social-mediaToday we played a social fixture at Heckmondwike Petanque Club. They’ve been going 2 years longer than us and have over 60 members. The experience showed in the end. 3 rounds with 6 teams each side and at the end it was a really close one with the final score being 10-8 to Heckmondwike.

A very creditable performance on our first friendly match as a club.  Good individual performances from Maz and Paul who won all 3 games but overall a great day out and once the rain had cleared a very nice day. We’re going to invite them back in a month and hope to win the return. Loved the Obut rings. Think we’ll buy some.

Plan your August

We have a few events planned. They’re posted on the gate and in the clubhouse but here’s a reminder. We have 41 paid up members – let’s see you at some of these free and fun events. Best attendance so far is 18 for the Triples competition.

single-300x222Sunday 17th at 1pm is Club Singles event. As the name suggest you’re on your own against another club member and it’s first to 13. We’ll play 3 rounds and after that the 2 highest ranked players who will play a final. The twist is that each club member will be given a handicap as in Golf. Good or experienced players will start from scratch but beginners will receive a start from 1 to 7 points which they will use in every game. So if a beginner plays the club chairman the score before the first end is Beginner 7-0 Chairman. Singles games tend to be shorter so the whole event will only take about 2 hours and everyone can watch and cheer for their favourite with the final on Piste 10. No entry fee; members only; handicaps set by club committee. Winner walks away with title of Club Singles Champion.

MeleeThursday 21st is our only evening melee of the season so let’s see if we can reach double figures. Start at 6pm and hopefully 3 rounds but we may have to cut it short if it’s bad weather. Bring your favourite lemonade and a bag of crisps and we’ll put out a dozen chairs and make a bit of a show. No entry fee; members only;

petanqueTuesday 26th is our last planned afternoon melee.

Same as previous paragraph. Hope for a good afternoon and we should manage 3 games. No entry fee; members only.
