Chess with steel balls in Greenhead Park

December 3rd started at 1130 with a members meeting where many club issues discussed. Notes of this meeting will be released soon. While some went home to keep out of the cold 12 players stayed on to play the final melee of the six month season and to find the overall winner. It was cold and yes it snowed.

The winner on the day was Jan with 3 wins out of 3 but Brendan won the overall title by a second place today and an impressive total of 37 points out of a maximum 39. Some 48 members took part at some stage between July and December. Next Melee season starts on January 7th 2024

The trophy was presented to Brendan (not for the first time) and you can see it alongside all the other trophies in the clubhouse.

The result from Sunday’s Winter Pairs at Wetherby is a terrific 5th place out of 17 teams for Moira & Mike. Above them are a few regional and national level players but below them are plenty of regional and national level players. Well done! The league table also shows them highly placed. There are over 100 players who have taken part this season and they are the leading HPC members in 16th place in the table.

There will be a chance to play a Winter Pairs at Huddersfield on Sunday 21st January 2024 when the event is held at Greenhead Park. Ask someone who’s played in one of these for info.
Some time ago in times BC the west Yorkshire League was thriving with 6 teams and there were 2 clubs in the north west who wanted to join in the fun. So the organiser of the WYL drew up a similar set of documentation and invited those two clubs (Rochdale and Trafford) to join Huddersfield and Heckmondwike in a Pennine League starting in spring and running through summer 2020. Everything was agreed and fixtures were drawn in March 2020 then lockdown arrived. The project was put on ice until it could be resurrected.
Between 2020 and the present the North West part of the Northern region (as it was called) decided to set up their own region and laid claim to the North West of England which meant that Northern had to redraw its boundaries and decided to choose Yorkshire as its geographic location. So Yorkshire Pétanque was born and Rochdale and Trafford couldn’t play in a Yorkshire league.
At the time there were rumblings and grumblings and relations between the new regions were tense for a while but after some time it settled down and the two regions set about playing in each others competition and getting on better but there was still no league for the 2 big clubs in the north west so in 2023 a Pennine league was proposed and the same 4 clubs that were involved at the beginning signed up to play again.
This time it was organised by Trafford and the format was not the same as the West Yorkshire league but was 4 events each hosted by one of the clubs and all 4 clubs would attend and play 3 League fixtures in a day. It meant a long day with 6 games for the teams but it was timed games so the schedule wouldn’t slip and it would finish in the daylight.
First one was at Huddersfield on Saturday 18th and it worked well. The Huddersfield squad was Robin, Shirley, Amanda, Vero, Mike, Doug and Steve and they performed well on the day. It was quite close in the end and the league table after the day was…
