Taster session

Kirklees Wellness Service popped in for a taster session on Wednesday 3rd November. They’d never played before but had tried Crown Green bowls and Boccia so had an inkling of what it was about. After a 5 minute tutorial on the game we played for nearly 90 minutes before rain stopped play.

There’s more than in this photo but it had just started to rain so some were taking cover. The group is thinking of a regular monthly session but they wisely decided to wait for next spring and warmer drier weather.

Rain then sun then wind then rain

And in the meantime 5 rounds of petanque was played in the Yorkshire winter pairs. 9 Huddersfield members were playing and 17 teams from all over Yorkshire turned up to grumble about the weather. First round was wet but during the second the rain stopped and for the bulk of the afternoon it was warm and sunny. But at the very end as four dour Yorkshiremen and women played the last few games there were serious wind issues.

Winners were Sylvestre and Clare and the best performance from Huddersfield was Paul who played with Rosanna from Leeds and made 4th place and a share of the prize money. Then we all went home to get warm and dry out. A great day.

Charity Melee and Raffle

24th October was another date in our calendar when we raise money for our charity. In 2021 it’s Age UK Kirklees & Calderdale. This event was a 3 round melee and members donated their entry fees to the charity instead of giving out cash prizes and also bought tickets in a raffle where all prizes had been donated by individuals or club members.

The total raised was £72. The charity heard about our efforts and gave us some t shirts, collecting buckets and other goodies to help out on the day. At the end of the year we’ll add up all the money raised from the various events and present it in the new year.

Winner on the day was Kevin who won all 3 games. Nigel and Sue were runners up.
