West Yorkshire Cup Final and League presentation

Leeds and Harrogate had made their way to the final which was held at Heckmondwike on Friday 10th August. The Cup came into being this year after 4 seasons of the league. It’s a knockout – obviously – and open to any club in the WYL or any organisation in West Yorkshire which has access to a petanque terrain where they can play their home matches.

The format is similar to the WYL but with the subtle difference that the fixture consists of the mens Triples, the women Triples and the 3 mixed pairs. The team the wins most of the 5 games progresses to the next round. The final is played on a neutral ground.

In the semi-finals Heckmondwike travelled to Leeds but lost 1-4 while Huddersfield went to Harrogate and lost 2-3. The final was set for Friday and a small crowd turned up. Here’s the two teams.

The women triples went to Leeds quite quickly but the mens triples was a tight game. There was a rain shower just after Harrogate went 10-8 up and everyone ran for shelter. Straight after the enforced break Leeds scored a 3 and a 2 to win the game. After the triples it was 2 wins to Leeds. Harrogate fought back to claim a crucial win in quick time but then Leeds secured the vital 3rd win to lift the trophy. The final game went to Harrogate and it finished 3-2 to Leeds. Because of interruptions for rain it took nearly 3 hours but we were teated to the famous Heckmondwike hospitality in their pavilion and Leeds had generously baked some cakes which they bought to the party. Here’s the winning team.

and a few more photos. Here’s Leeds captain Paul with the handsome 15 inch high trophy.

While we were there we presented the League Trophy to Heckmondwike. Their 3rd win in 4 years.

The league organiser would like to hear from any petanque clubs or other organisations in the region who would like to join the league or the cup competitions. The league currently starts after Easter and runs for 10 weeks. The Cup is played in June & July with the final in August. Please contact 07977772971.

Melee this Sunday £2 entry fee. 4 rounds

This Sunday our 4 round OPEN melee will have the best pork pies in Huddersfield (Hagues farmers shop) and HP sauce as refreshments.

Pour nos lecteurs français le sauce HP est une melange d’épices orientales and is a staple of la cuisine traditionnelle anglaise. Lance de but 1300. Be early!

N’oubliez pas de nous donner un euro ou quelques milles bals pour notre new clubhouse. Voir le blog post avec this link.

Men vs Women

Other local clubs put on this type of event and it’s been popular so we started our version Tuesday. 17 players were there and with a little juggling we had 4 teams on each side. We only played 3 rounds although we could have played 4 but it was a touch warm in the sun (and when the cloud cover came over chilly).

After round 1 it was 2 games each; after round 2 it was 4 games each but after round 3 it was 7-5 wins in favour of the men. The men also had the better points difference.A tasteful silver vase was presented to both captains after the event. The winning team will now decide what to call this trophy and we’ll have the base engraved. Roy’s suggestion of “We hammered them” wasn’t well received. We’ll play for this again in Spring and also in autumn next year. Here’s another picture of the captains.
