Yorkshire Winter League Pairs – Huddersfield

An Excellent Day of Boules on Sunday Feb 16th as Huddersfield hosted the Yorkshire Winter League Pairs event. A total of 18 Teams (36 Players) competed across the 5 games and braved exceedingly cold conditions for the day, brightening up for a brief moment before seeing the temperatures tumble once again.

Huddersfield had an excellent day on all fronts:-

Firstly the Social Team held there last raffle in support of the Samaritans, The monies raised pushed the total funds raised over the year to a record breaking grand total of £733. Congratulations to Sue Crofts, Maureen Abbott and Jane Guest for all their combined efforts.

Secondly congratulations to Brendan & Nell for coming second on the day and also to Kevin & Christine for their 4th place position.

Well done to Keith for his 8th place who was an 11th hour replacement partner with Neil from Trafford.

And finally congratulations To Melvyn having taken part in his 1st ever competition. I suspect he will select a more competent partner for future events.

Second round of Pennine League held at HPC Saturday 2nd February

On a bitterly cold – but thankfully dry – day, Petanque teams from Trafford, Rochdale and Heckmondwike gathered at Greenhead Park to contest the second round of the Pennine Petanque League.

There was a step improvement in HPC’s final position. Having come last at Heckmondwike in November, we managed third position this time.

Our first set of fixtures were against Heckmondwike. We lost all five games. Hecky were pretty much unassailable all day, only losing two out of fifteen games.

Against Trafford Brendan, Nell and Shirley won the mixed triples game 13-1, and Vero and Philip were unlucky to be narrowly beaten (9-8) in one of the Open Pairs games. Overall, we won only one out of five games.

We had most success against Rochdale, with both triples (Sue D, Philip, Vero and Shirley, Brendan Nell) winning their games, and two pairs winning theirs. Overall, we won four out of five games.

On a brighter Huddersfield enjoyed great success in the open which melee comprised six games running alongside the League games. Our star player of the day was Jan Sinclair who took the honours, being the only player to win five games.

It is always a thrill to host large numbers of players at Huddersfield.

The next fixture is at Trafford on Sunday 2nd March. The final round will be at Rochdale on Sunday 16th March.

Almost 10% of the sleeper fund has already been received.

In the last week we have received donations of £45 from three members, and we raised £88 on Saturday’s tournament raffle.

We are one-tenth of the way there!
