Quiz Night

Unknown

Friday 30th was our first Quiz night. Marsh Conservative Club was the venue and 24 members turned up to drink beer and wine, eat pie & peas and try their hand at some quizzes. The idea was to have a few small quizzes rather than a big one and thus have more people winning something. Read on.

We started with  Rules of Petanque quiz (available for your petanque club quiz night here). Roy was the question master and a prepared sheet of 10 multiple choice questions was circulated but the total number of correct answers was 13. After 15 minutes and a drink or two and an argument or three The winners were The Marshians which was Brendan’s team (which happened to have three quarters off Marsh Liberal Club quiz league team in it).

Next was a version of Countdown. We had 7 teams, Rock & Roll, Sumo, 3 Scottish fillies, GD, Livesey Family, Dolphins and Marshians so we played 7 rounds of word games and tried 2 numbers games. The game was dependent on an online connection which was a bit slow and seemed to disappear when we tried the numbers games but each team chose their vowels and consonants and a countdown timer played while people worked out their best words (and sometimes afterwards as well).

Notable successes were Barry getting 712 right on the button on his own in a Numbers round and The Livesey family nearly spelling Pharaoh correctly. Some sets of letters were hard. In the end Livesey family were on 37 points, Marshians were on 31 but the counundrum round NSOMREWEC was guessed correctly by Marshians at 29 seconds on the clock. They jumped to 41 points and won the event. Next stop Pie & Peas and Dingbats. We looked at Dingbats as we ate all the pies.

Scores were low but Rock ‘n’ Roll were winners with 7. A good clear copy is available for anyone who wants to try it. My favourite was No. 6 – Love, Honour and Obey. Even when you know the answer you wonder why.

Finally after a raffle we set about the 10 question but 100 answer quiz.  This proved tough and scores were lower than anticipated but  Dolphins (Pauline, David, Christine & Michael) won with a score of 58/100 just ahead of Marshians on 57/100. Dolphins also managed to remember the 10 events of the decathlon to score a maximum in one round.

By 1030 it was winding down and people were going home. The club made a good amount for Club funds and most people said they enjoyed it. The pies being voted the best part of the evening. We’ll do it again next year. New quizmasters actively encouraged.

The answer is NEWCOMERS.

On the other hand…

Roy’s idea of a fundraiser for the Stroke Association went down well. 16 players enjoyed a 3 round melee with the added complication that the first round was played with the wrong hand. Research shows that many Stroke victims lose the use of one of their hands so we all experienced using the other hand to do simple tasks like point within a couple of feet of the coche. Most people have trouble doing this anyway so playig with the other hand was challenging. We have videos of our attempts.

On the way everyone paid £3 to play and there was raffle with serious prizes. Also members baked cakes and buns and these were sold for small donation to the main cause. Overall we raised £80-07.

As to the winners some people had bad days but some had good days. Paul in particular played well winning 13-1, 13-0 and 13-4 making a record points difference of +34. Robin and Malcolm were also on the podium. We’ll do it again next year. Antique petanque medals painted purple – the colour of the Stroke association – were presented and the winner received a handsome trophy also painted purple. If you look very hard at the image you can see these. Trophy will be on display in Club Shed for a few weeks.

A day of records.

Rock n RollWonderful afternoon of petanque. First of all there were 32 players – a new record. And 16 teams all paid £2 so the prize pot was the largest ever of £15, £10 and £5 with £2 to club funds. Secondly it was dry and often sunny. Thirdly everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and to top it all off Robin and Rita (AKA Rock & Roll) won the first prize with 3 wins out of 3 and a points difference of +23.

Second were the Killers (Phil and Marie) with 3 wins and +19 and third were a team called Whatever (Paul & Janet). 12 people stayed on afterwards to play another game or two.

Next 7 days is busy with a league match on Tuesday, The Stroke Association fundraiser on Thursday and quiz night Friday.

November begins with the members monthly melee on Sunday the 1st.

Members Meeting 18th October

member1) It was agreed that each year we would adopt a charity to support with events and raffles during that year. Members to be polled early January via website and newsletter.
2) Members to be invited to suggest ideas for events for next summer’s programme. Website and newsletter.
3) A letter to be written to Clare Berry who supervised the installation of our Mediterranean Garden, following up the email previously sent, congratulating and thanking her and the students and suggesting the area be considered for further projects. Possibly invite her and the new students to a pétanque event. Contact address needed.
4) Name badges for members. This suggestion was not supported by the meeting but it was decided that club members would wear badges when hosting an external event and visitors would be given hand written sticky badge labels.
5) Robin volunteered to take over the role of External Events Organiser from Roy and was co-opted onto the committee. Roy to send him some information.
6) Brendan agreed to re-paint the lane markings and numbering and also look at the boule holes in the terrain perimeter wooden surround.
7) Terrain grit. The feeling of the meeting was that we needed to add more before next spring.
8) Julie reported all OK with club kit but would investigate a playing top made of lighter material (weight not colour!)
9) External coaching was accepted as a good idea. There will be a cost involved so we need to establish what that will be and how many members would want to take part. Roy will progress with a view to a session next spring.
10) A late Christmas event was supported to be held in January 2016. Marsh Conservative Club is a possible venue. The quiz night on Friday 30th will be a good chance to consider the suitability of this venue.
11) Members to be urged to add names to the lists in the clubhouse for a) The ‘Give a Hand’ charity mêlée on Thursday 29th and b) The Quiz Night at Marsh Conservative Club on Friday 30th

Quiz Night and Charity Event

Two events at the end of October need your support. One is for a good cause – The Stroke Association –  and one is for members to socialise and raise some money for Club Funds.

Thursday afternoon at 1pm on 29th October is our Give a Hand event on behalf of The Stroke Association. We’ll be playing 3 round melee but the first round will be played with your “other hand” as stroke victims often lose the use of one hand.

There will be a £3 entry fee which includes a raffle ticket and all proceeds will go to the Stroke association. Winner will receive a trophy to keep and 2 next best will receive medals.

quiz-night-logoFriday evening 30th October at 7-30 in Marsh Club there will be a quiz night for members and friends including a pie & peas supper. There will be several quizzes on the night some based on your TV favourites. Some will be individual like Huddersfield’s version of 15 to 1. After supper there will be monster quiz for teams of 4. Entry fee will be £5 per person. There will be a licensed bar and a a raffle.

We hope you can attend one or both of these events. There will be posters in the Clubhouse. Please let a committee member know if you want to attend either. Limit for both events is 40 people.
