Pat’s plaque

Last week we finally received the plaque in memory of club member Pat Beazley.
Pat loved playing pétanque and was a keen supporter of the club. She had a strong competitive streak and played to win. She also loved going out for a meal and having a drink with “the girls”. Even in recent months when her illness prevented her from playing she always had a smile for every one. Pat really was a lovely lady and a good friend to many club members. She certainly will be sorely missed.

Her family is also planning on planting a rose bush in the club grounds. We’ll let members know when this is going to be done.

October Triples

8 teams entered on a great autumn afternoon. Prize money of £45 to give out. (one team only had 2 players).

After 3 rounds only one team had won all their 3 games. Three teams were on 2 wins and 3 teams were on 1 win. One team failed to register a win.

When the scores were all added up and checked through the winners were new members Pete and Margaret playing as The Odd Couple recently returned from a 6 month break on a caravan park near Bordeaux where they played a bit of boules.  They took away £21. Of the teams with 2 wins SRB (Sue, Roy and Brendan) claimed 2nd place with £15 and Paul, Barrie and Sandie (BPS) won 3rd place of £9,

SRB could have won the prize but their game went to 12-13. If it had been 13-12 They’d have scooped the 1st prize. C’est la vie.

Octoberfest

Standard melee to start off our own winter league. 17 players. Cool and windy. At the very end players were starting to drift away as some rain swept in so many won’t know the result.

It was Rita’s day. 3 Wins and +18 followed by Sandra B with 3 wins and +12.  No-one else won all 3 games but 8 won 2 out of 3 and the best points difference was Yvonne with +15.

Summer Melee Champion

The final event had 14 players and it was cold and cloudy but we were kept going by the cake that Elizabeth had put in her freezer from the Mansfield visit.

Maureen came 3rd, Bob (a new member) did well coming 2nd but Brendan did really well coming 1st,

Sue and Richard were trailing in their last game 12 to 7 to Reg and Clive and Sue told Richard “Shall we score a 6 this end?” and they did which won them the game.
This means that Sue has won the trophy but Daniel forgot to bring it back so the presentation will be later. Here’s the final table

Last of the summer wine event

Robin works out the maths…

The 4 round, “Last of The Summer Wine” Open Pairs event was an interesting event.

Five “pairs” entered. So we fiddled about with the 8 pairs sheet, slightly getting disorientated and hoping that no pair would come round the corner.
Sort of did in the form of Pauline so Pauline joined Rock ‘n’ Roll to become Rock, Roll & Razzle & I had to improvise. So, I thought 4 round snake – no problem we each play the other teams.
Unfortunately the bye round for each make it 5 rounds – the ex accountant needs to go back to basic sums.
Heavy rain nearly stopped play in the middle of the last game when 3 teams were playing for 2nd & 3rd place.
Beeches had already claimed top place, so like seasoned troupers we carried on.

Anyway to cut a long story short we all had an enjoyable day with results:

Beeches (Malcolm & Sandra)       3 wins +12  £10
Red & White (Fred & Melvin)        2 wins +8      £6
Twin Peaks (Kevin & Christine)    2 wins -0       £4
2 Bob  (Bob & Sandie)                  2 wins –5     Nowt
Rock, Roll & Razzle                       1 win –15     Bugger All
