Last of the summer wine event

Robin works out the maths…

The 4 round, “Last of The Summer Wine” Open Pairs event was an interesting event.

Five “pairs” entered. So we fiddled about with the 8 pairs sheet, slightly getting disorientated and hoping that no pair would come round the corner.
Sort of did in the form of Pauline so Pauline joined Rock ‘n’ Roll to become Rock, Roll & Razzle & I had to improvise. So, I thought 4 round snake – no problem we each play the other teams.
Unfortunately the bye round for each make it 5 rounds – the ex accountant needs to go back to basic sums.
Heavy rain nearly stopped play in the middle of the last game when 3 teams were playing for 2nd & 3rd place.
Beeches had already claimed top place, so like seasoned troupers we carried on.

Anyway to cut a long story short we all had an enjoyable day with results:

Beeches (Malcolm & Sandra)       3 wins +12  £10
Red & White (Fred & Melvin)        2 wins +8      £6
Twin Peaks (Kevin & Christine)    2 wins -0       £4
2 Bob  (Bob & Sandie)                  2 wins –5     Nowt
Rock, Roll & Razzle                       1 win –15     Bugger All

No more Thursdays any more

At the end of August Thursday evenings ceased to exist. Play returns to afternoons starting at 1pm. This saves a lot of time adjusting times as the sun sets earlier and earlier. Thursday evenings return on 3rd May 2018.

Pay to play Tuesday

15 people paid £2 today to play in a 4 round melee. Just as we were starting 2 more members hove into view and we briefly thought about re-drawing the games but the 2 decided they would just practise so we carried on

** Note to all members ** Parking is difficult. Leave extra time to arrive on time.

So we played 4 rounds and only one player won all 4 and that was Marie. With a point difference of +28 she was clearly the best on the day and won a nice little £15.

Four players won 3 games. Sue had a points total of +8, Paul had +16 but Phil and Kevin were tied on +20. It was either split the money or gamble on a one end playoff. Both players opted for the playoff and it didn’t take long. Phil was nearest after 3 throws and Kevin had one shot to either outpoint him or shoot him out. The shot missed and Kevin took home £5 with Phil trousering £10.

Huddersfield 13 Mansfield 11

Earlier in the year we went Mansfield to play an inter club fixture. We took 18 players and Mansfield provided the same and we played four rounds of Triples with the final score being Mansfield 14 Huddersfield 10. At the time we said that the losing team would provide a trophy for this fixture. So the first thing to do at 11am last Sunday was to present Mansfield with The Huddersfield Cup. Here’s Paul presenting the cup to David. Then the games began.

We played the same format which is worth other clubs having a look at (see later) and by 4pm Huddersfield had won back the cup by beating Mansfield 13-11. David meanwhile had presented us with a pennant to add to our collection.

Not long after that we took photos of all players, Teams, best teams and other interesting things which can be found in the gallery. There may be more to come as many pictures were taken all afternoon.

The cup comes home.

The format? This was started by Mansfield and we continued it. Each club supplies an equal number of Triples teams ( we had 6) and each team plays 3 games against 3 different teams from the other side and each game is on a different piste.  For the 4th and final round the teams  are ranked according to their performance and the top home team plays the top away team right down to the worst home team v the worst away team so in the final round the teams play someone at their level. Best home team and best away team win a bottle of wine each.

We’ve made a scoresheet that keeps track of this and we’ll pass it on to anyone who is thinking of  a social fixture with another club. Here’s our completed version.

Hudds v Mans Aug 20 2017

On the way we had a fabulous lunch with all sorts of sandwiches, bhajis, pork pies, sausage rolls, crisps, salads plus an enormous carrot cake, a Tiramisu cake and a red velvet cake. Assorted drinks were also available.

All in all a great day of friendly but competitive Petanque. We’ll be doing it again next year. If any club out there want to play Huddersfield on this basis we’d be glad to do so.

A brilliant day out.

Tuesday 22nd at 1300 is a midsummer melee. £2 to enter. 4 rounds, Cash Prizes!

Club Triples Champions

18 members enjoyed a gorgeous day in the park playing in the club Annual Triples event.
Only one team, the 3 Stooges, Melvyn, Christine and Kevin won all 3 games and won the magnificent trophies.
Two teams scored 2 wins.
In third place where the Hibernators, Yvonne, Alasdair and Joyce with 2W +/- 0 and in second place where the Continentals, Roy, Brendan and Geertje  with 2W +13.
Next big event is Tuesday 22nd August  – 4 round melee with £2 entry fee and cash prizes. Open to anyone.
