Mixed Pairs Result

pairsAn interesting group of players arrived. Some clearly semi professional and well prepared teams but some who had turned up without a partner and hoped for the best. Paul & Phil were without as were several loose women but teams were hastily cobbled together and we ended up with 8 pairs and 1 triple. This meant one team each round had a bye (which they won 13-7) and proved to be very popular because of the weather. They could sit inside.

What weather? We started in the dry but rain soon set in and waterproofs were in great demand.

2 hours later as we were finishing the 3rd round the sun came out and shorts andT shirts were the order of the day.

Only one team had won all their games. Sandie & Paul won first prize. Second and their first podium ever was T’s @ 6, a team made up of Fred and Elisabeth. 3rd place were Kinder Eggs and there was an exciting 4 ball playoff between Roy/Rita and Roger/Jane which led to Roy/Rita walking off with 30 bob. Nice event. There’s more entry fee & cash prizes coming up. Next one is Longest Day melee. 4 rounds on Tuesday 21st June starting at 1300.

A brave effort…

league…but this afternoon we just missed out on winning the West Yorkshire League. Heckmondwike were the visitors for the final match and we needed to win 2 games out of 5 to win the league. Heckmondwike needed to win 4.

Both triples went to Heckmondwike so the teams were level on 16 wins each. Paul & Phil had a quick win 13-6 including one end where they scored a 6!. Huddersfield were leading 17-16 with 2 games still in play.

Heckmondwike won a game to tie it at 17-17 so the very last game became the decider. It was close all the way through. At one stage Huddersfield were winning 9-6 but through a combination of good shooting, accurate pointing and a slice of luck the Heckmondwike pair scraped home 13-9 and the League champions had retained their title with 18 wins to 17.

A damned close run thing. For the winners Pam and Alan Wallace played very well but a massive improvement from Huddersfield after a 3rd place and only 11 wins in 2015. Pictures when they arrive. Full league tables after the final match which is taking place Tuesday evening and will decide the wooden spoon.

Captain Robin Schofield praised his team for their efforts and their improvement over the last year. Heckmondwike Secretary remarked on how Huddersfield had put more effort into the league this year and had made great strides.

2017 we’ll be even better. Watch out the current champions. We’ll get you next year.

Open Day Report

Bank Holiday Monday we put out a tombola, a cake stall and a trophy table and invited the world to Huddersfield. And they turned up in droves. And we all had a great day.

Petanque Open Day May 2016 001

There was lemon drizzle cake, chocolate cake, lemon dizzle cake, strawberry butterfly buns lemon drizzle cake and assorted fancies and fairies. And everything sold out!

Petanque Open Day May 2016 002 The tombola had dozens of prizes some quite good and the entire stall sold out!

Petanque Open Day May 2016 007

The trophy table also attracted interest and most people liked to see the variety and picked up a bit more knowledge about how boules are made, how we play in leagues, have social events etc.

And many people came in and tried the game. Four of them joined on the spot and 2 more promised to do so. So overall it was a fantastic day which we will repeat next Bank Holiday Monday. ~ big bonus was that we raised £92-50 for club funds from the stalls and took £48 in membership fees. A total of over £150!

Thank you to all members who turned up early and helped set out the stalls and who offered free coaching and who gave up their time to help the club. Pictures soon in the Gallery.

Next year we’ll start at 12 o’clock.

League finale Tuesday

leagueThe West Yorkshire league reaches a huge conclusion on Tuesday 31st May at Huddersfield.

Two teams play each other for 1st place and second place. Huddersfield are ahead having won 16 games this season and have topped the table all through the season. Heckmondwike, the current league champions after a poor start have recovered to win 14 games. There are 5 games left to play at Huddersfield on Tuesday at 1pm. Huddersfield need 2 of them; Heckmondwike need 4 of them. Points difference won’t be relevant.

At the other end of the table Mirfleld and Leeds are tied on 10 wins. It’s a winner takes all game. Points difference won’t come into it again. This game is at Leeds at 7pm.
