September Round up.

The blogmaster has been away (playing petanque in France) so here’s a summary of what’s been going on.

Summer League winner is Roy!!!

See the final league table on the winners page. Winter League starts first Sunday in October and the format is changed slightly so only your best 3 scores count. Others can be discarded.

Mediterranean Garden finally arrives!!

Promised earlier in the year but it’s done now. Sculptures, baskets, carved logs and lots more. No doubt we’ll see gorgeous mediterranean colours in the spring.

IMG_0057In the meantime here’s a man sitting on a log.

 Tuesday Afternoon Melee

12 members, including 1 new, played a £1 melee on Tuesday 15th September. Only 2 players achieved 3 wins and the winner was Rita W on 3W +23 winning £8 closely followed by Roger on 3W +22 winning £4. No pictures of this historic event.

Kirklees Autumn League starts.

3 clubs (but 5 teams) are taking part in this league which runs through September for 10 weeks. Brendan is Team Manager and has started some training and team building sessions. First fixture is Tuesday 29th at Mirfield.

Potential for new coaching session.

Another northern player who is competing his coaching badges soon said he may be able to offer some coaching soon. Roy is watching this one. We’re very keen for players who play in league matches to undertake some coaching.

Finally the club Triples this sunday.

Club Triples Competition. Free and members only. Agree your team in advance or take pot luck on the day. 3 (yes 3!) trophies await the successful trio. And there’s more – Cassoulet & Cassis will also be served. What’s not to like. Weather looks good. Last Year’s winners – Three in a bed – may be defending their title.

Summer wine Pairs

summer-wine-2A few glasses of wine were consumed. Although the plan was to wait until after Round 2 some started early but the standard of play improved (they say). After 3 glasses, I mean rounds, the clear winners were Brendan & Julie aka The Marshians. 3 wins and a healthy points difference of +25.

2nd place was between Mick & Rita and the Boulangers (David & Daniel) who both had 3 wins and +20 points. A one end decider was played and Boulangers won the second prize with Mick & Rita being third.

Next event Monthly melee on Sunday 6th and the climax of the six summer months of melees. Will anyone catch Roy? Does anyone want to? After that a smaller autumn & Winter programme will operate. Members will be emailed the dates soon.

Regional Triples

IMG_0047Bolstered by a stern talking to from Chairman about playing at a higher level and determined to work as a team 4 teams from the club had a go at a 5 games in a day event with a few quality visiting players from around the region. They played well and Robins Nest can boast of a good 5th place.

Many thanks to everyone who turned out at 8-30 am to set up for the day and who all chipped in with raffle, organising and provision of refreshments. We provided a scratch team on the day to make the numbers up to 10 teams and over the course of the day we had many club members popping in to have a look and encourage the players. Lots of spectators as well. At one time there were 50 people at the terrain.

The scoresheet (above) went through several revisions as helpful players worked it out their way but it was checked before the results were announced. Visitors won the three cash prizes but all HPC teams played well and it was great day of Petanque.

Next opportunity is Sunday 30th with Summer Wine Pairs. Register in advance please

Mel is Club Singles Champion.

IMG_000118 members played today. 3 round snake followed by the final. Despite the expected moans about the handicaps awarded the fact that most games were closely fought demonstrates that the handicap system worked well and was fair.
6 members won 2 games but only 2, Marie & Melvyn won all 3 and went into the final. This was closely fought and finished with Melvyn winning the game 13:10. I presented the magnificent trophy then most members played another game or two. Quite a few park visitors dropped in to see what was going on and took away business cards with one couple very interested in joining

The Generation Game

IMG_0031

We called it the generation game as the teams were made up of grandparents and grand children. All children involved were under 16 and all grandparents were around 64. There were 8 teams who all played 3 games and after we added up the scores two teams played out a final.
Overall winners were The Farraris (Kallum & Roger) who won every game they played including a 13-4 win in the final over Em & Im (Emily & Roy). The winners took home a handsome trophy, a large box of chocolates and a big bag of Haribo sweets.
Every child received a petanque medal and every child played some wonderful shots on the day. They’re already asking when the next event is.
