Huddersfield International pairs

Fantastic event on Sunday 10th. Players from all over Europe – Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, France, Wales and Heckmondwike – played a leagues plus knockout tournament. 20 teams played leagues before lunchtime then the players were ranked and in the afternoon 8 played the main event, 8 played the Plate and 4 played the consolage. Flags of participating countries were flown on the registration desk. After lunch it was a KO and the full results will be posted on NP website shortly but Main event final was one of the best games ever seen at Huddersfield where Matt Blyton & Alex (from Germany) played Angie Gaughan and Maijje (from Finland) in an epic battle which ranged all over the terrain and almost every point was 5cm from the coche and almost every shot was a carreau.  Top quality tactics and performance. The girls were leading until late on in the game when the men overtook them and took the trophy and the first prize. Mounties won the Plate and a Team called And Again took the consolage. It was hot and sunny and club  members turned out to help with raffle and odd jobs which made the whole event go smoothly. Huge thanks to Nigel, Jack, Elaine, Richard, Amanda.More pictures on the way from many taken. It was the club’s first silver event and there are lessons to learn but overall a fantastic day with some of Europe’s top players. The 3 HPC teams didn’t win a pot but had a great day.

Members Monthly Melee – June

Congratulations to Roger who was the only player to win all 3 games. Richard (Mr Consistency) is leading the table but anyone can still win 3 in a row and jump to the top. In real life the winner will probably come from the top ten. We’ll see on September 2nd. Glad to see Sue and Phil stepping in to run the event very efficiently. If anyone would like to learn to do this be an observer at the next one on the 1st of July.

Club Pairs Champions

The Pairs Tournament was played in very good spirits in very good weather. Maureen & Nigel are Pairs Champions 2018.

There was a low turnout due to other petanque events, holidays & hangovers from the events of the previous day – I believe there was the FA final & a Z list celebrity wedding

We had a final between Heart to Hartley (Phil & Richard) v’s Hopefuls ( Maureen & Nigel)
The final was won by Hopefuls 13-8

Shotgun Pairs

Great afternoon of petanque playing our first ever ‘shotgun’ competition.
Started with an admin hiccup when the organiser tried to make 19 players into 17 doubles and 1 triples team and use an 18 team snake score sheet and then read out opponents for the first round. It wasn’t ’till I got to team 9 and realised they had no opponents that I realised I’d cocked up. Some teams had already chosen their piste!
Resolved fairly quickly once I realised what had happened with a redraw of 3 triples teams and 5 doubles teams. Did it that way rather than 1 triples and 8 doubles to avoid any bye’s being played.
Oh the joys of being the organiser! Everyone was very understanding and the only person upset by the fiasco was me!
So to the results:
2 teams scored no wins, 2 teams scored 1 win each. 2 teams scored 2 wins and 2 scored 3 wins
In 4th place and just missing out on the prize money with 2W + 3 were Robin, Rita and Maggie
In 3rd place with 2W + 8 were Sandra and David W – £4
Second with 3W + 20 were Phil and Richard – £6
And today’s winners, despite all the early aggravations, were Fred, Rita S and Roy with 3W + 24 pts. – £9

Shotgun Sunday tomorrow

You put your name in either the box labelled ‘Pointer’ or the one labelled ‘Shooter’ When all the entries are in the organiser will even up the entries so we have the same number in each box then draw one name from each box. That pair will then play together, in those roles, for all 3 rounds of the snake competition. If we have an uneven number of players one or maybe two teams will be triples. £1 p/p all returned as prize money.
Please turn up early!
